Sunday Salon

It’s been another busy week with few updates. I have an upcoming author giveaway and a book promotion post. I will be posting 2 giveaways of my own this week. The winner of Lord John and the Private Matter has not emailed me back, so I will give her a few more days and then pick another winner if I can’t get a response. Llehn won the giveaway for Sarah. Like Mayflies in a Stream ends tomorrow!

Reading this week has been almost non-existent. Between birthdays, holidays, doctor office visits and work I just haven’t had time. I started O’Juliet by Robin Maxwell and it has already hooked me. I plan to read The Queen’s Bastard, The Wild Irish and Signora da Vinci before the big week of O’Juliet (late January), as I’ve already read The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn, To the Tower Born, Mademoiselle Boleyn and Virgin — though could use a re-read, as it’s been a while for the first two.

I have been listening to The Shadow of the Pomegranate by Jean Plaidy on audio and I absolutely love it! The narrator does excellent work with the characters. She can switch from English accent to Spanish and French effortlessly. My commute is now about 20-25 minutes each way and I don’t even notice because I am so into the story.

This week I plan to read as much Robin Maxwell as I can, but any reviews will be saved for later. I also plan to finish the audiobook and post the review on Royal Intrigue, which has been sadly neglected lately.

What are you reading this week?

I’m hoping to maybe finish The Golden Tulip this week – probably toward the weekend. I got a little more reading done today cuz I have been down with a cold or sinus infection. It’s actually pretty good, thanks Arleigh.

  2. Oh I am jealous that you will be reading up on all the Maxwell books. I’ve read The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn, Mademoiselle Boleyn, and Signora da Vinci, and am a couple chapters into O, Juliet (like Lucy said, how could we resist a peek pre-event time?!) I still really want to read her Elizabeth series, and Lizzy keeps telling me to read To the Tower Born, which is her all time fave.

This week I’m finishing up Wolf Hall. It’s really good–especially for us Tudor nuts who have read almost every Tudor historical fiction book under the sun. It is a nice change of pace, and has a very literary feel to it, making it almost more lit-fic than hist-fic. I think you’d like it…there are a lot of “Tudor jokes” and other subtle references mentioned throughout, so people already familiar with Henry VIII’s story would really appreciate this one.

Heather – glad you are enjoying it! I loved Rosalind Laker’s The Venetian Mask… so detailed with wonderful prose.

Allie – To the Tower Born is such a good read on the princes. It’s also a favorite of mine. I love her conspiracy theory. I’ve been very iffy about Wolf Hall because I’ve never liked Cromwell. If it were about Cramner I’d jump right on it. I may get it and put it on my TBR pile though, because so many people are raving about it.

I am not reading any HF at this stage – strange I know! I am reading Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger and A Guide to the Birds of East Africa by Nicholas Drayson. Both very good in their own ways. As to what is next, probably either Grave Goods by Ariana Franklin or Honolulu by Alan Brennert.
